Top 5 Reasons Vehicle Owners Wait to File Hail Damage Car Claims With Insurance Company

…and 5+ effective stress relief tactics to ease the ATX auto hail claims blues.

The Zen of Filing Auto Hail Damage Claim

The Zen of Filing an Auto Hail Claim

Austin vehicle owners are very well aware of 2 things: Unpredictable weather patterns and Mother Nature’s relentless unloading of hail stones from the sky and onto their vehicles. Don’t get me wrong, there is no other state I’d rather reside but dealing with the aftermath of a hailstorm can become tiresome.

In today’s blog, we will cover the 5 major pain points that customers experience when their vehicle has been damaged in a hail storm and some coping strategies that can help ease the process.

  1. Stress. The stress that comes with dealing with their insurance company and the Austin auto hail claims process is a big one. No one readily embraces the opportunity to deal with their insurance company, this goes double when it comes to filing a hail damage claim on their vehicle. Just the thought of a claim that falls under the “Act of God” umbrella is intimidating enough. Unless you are a person who prefers to approach this type of situation with the “rip off the bandaid” mentality, you have time to take a breather. Next, take some time to assess the situation and the damage.
    • Details about the storm and damage.
      • What was the date of the storm’s occurrence?
      • Where was your vehicle during the hail storm? City / physical location.
      • How big were the hail stones? Ping pong, golf ball, baseball, tennis ball.
      • Do you have pictures of the hail that damaged your vehicle?
      • Grab your cell phone and snap some pictures of the damage.
      • Take note of the severity of the damage and the size of the dents. What panels have sustained most of the damage? Are the dents dime-sized, or quarter-sized?
      • Is there any damage to the windshields, sunroof?
    • Details about your insurance policy.
      • Who is your insurance provider?
      • What kind of coverage do you have on your vehicle?
      • Do you have a deductible?
      • Does your policy cover a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired?
  2. Choosing a paintless dent repair shop. After a hail storm, give it about a week and you will have PDR shops seeking YOU out. You will be inundated with multiple ATX paintless dent repair shops and traditional auto body repair shops vying for your business. We suggest taking some time to do your research. Here is a list of ways you can do your research to find the best paintless dent repair shop to hire to repair your auto hail damage.
    • Who does the actual repairs? Some body shops subcontract with paintless dent repair shops to do their auto hail damage repairs.
    • Experience with auto hail repair. If you live in the ATX area, most of the PDR shops have experience repairing this kind of damage. You can either take a look at their website, check out BBB, or simply call and ask about their experience with auto hail repair.
    • Experience with auto hail claims. It is your choice as to how much you want your repair facility to be involved with the auto hail claims process. Most of the auto hail repair specialty shops communicate with insurance adjusters on a very regular basis.
    • Customer reviews. Google reviews are always a great go-to when reviewing any company in the service industry. 5 stars are amazing but you can get some great HONEST feedback from a maybe “not so good” experience. How did the PDR company handle the review? What steps did they take to de-escalate or improve the customer experience?
    • Warranty. Does the repair shop offer a warranty on their repairs? You can usually find this information on their website.
    • Customer service. What is their approach to customer service? Offerings like “Pay no deductible” and “Free loaners” are amazing perks but what is their customer care philosophy? The repair shop won’t JUST be repairing your vehicle’s hail damage. They will most likely be communicating with your insurance adjuster and be the intermediary between you and your insurance company.
  3. Hassling with the insurance company. If you’ve gone through the auto hail damage claims process with your insurance company in the past, you might have experienced a few of these specific aggravations and concerns already. We will list some of the most frequently mentioned pain points experienced by our customers and our team members.

It is VERY important to understand that Insurance Adjusters are NOT auto body shop technicians nor paintless dent repair technicians. Insurance adjusters work for the insurance company and so do their “direct repair shops”. Superior Dent Solutions work for you and in YOUR best interest.
    • Inaccurate estimates by adjusters. Many adjusters will come to do their damage assessments and estimates at your home. Estimating a vehicle outside is a very inaccurate way to assess hail damage, as many of the dents will not be seen due to the glare of the sun. We already know this. If you choose to have your vehicle repaired, notify the insurance company as to the paintless dent repair shop you have chosen to use for the repairs. Before we start any repairs on a vehicle, we re-assess and identify ALL of the damage using industry-specific LED lights. We want to ensure the insurance estimate was written accurately. If we identify additional damage not notated on the adjuster estimate, we will submit a supplement to cover the additional funding needed to repair all of the damage.
    • Steering tactics. Your adjustor may ask you where you are taking your vehicle to get repaired. They will try to encourage you to use a repair facility on their “direct repair shop” or “preferred shop” list. They will also use tactics to imply that you have to use one of these shops for one reason or another. Usually, they say it is to protect you, the quality of vehicle repair, and so many other misleading and untrue statements. First and foremost, this is absolutely false and illegal. You can learn more about “steering tactics” in this blog post.
    • Proving damage. We’ve heard stories about adjusters claiming that hail cannot crack, chip, or break windshields, sunroofs, moonroofs, and ANY glass on a vehicle. They might even ask you to “prove” that the damage was from the hail storm. I know, how do you possibly do that? One benefit of working with a professional paintless dent repair shop before you talk to your insurance company is that we are ON your side. We can personally handle all of the “proving damage” questions and more.
    • Long wait times. It is true, after a major weather occurrence, wait times to get an adjuster scheduled to look at your vehicle can take a few days to weeks. The route we suggest is to tell your adjuster that you want to meet them at the paintless dent repair shop of your choice to do the estimate. This saves time for 2 reasons. The PDR shop has the equipment and expertise to estimate a vehicle correctly the first time. This saves time and the aspect of hassling with your insurance company. In most cases, specifically at Superior Dent Solutions, we can just keep your vehicle for repairs after the estimate. is approved.
    • The insurance company hosted parking lot estimates. Cattle calls are no fun. Enough said. 🙂
  4. Prior damage. I refer back to ATX because this is pretty common. Your vehicle is damaged in a hail storm, you wait to file your claim, and in the meantime, BAM – another hail storm, more damage. Maybe you had filed a claim for the first storm, maybe you put that “to-do” on the back burner. Your insurance company already knows about the concurrent storms.

** At Superior Dent Solutions, this is not an uncommon situation and something we handle frequently with customers and insurance companies. If you need assistance or have another scenario we have not touched on, just give us a call and we will get you squared away.

Here are the 3 scenarios you might be facing and what to do.
    • You filed a claim for a past storm but haven’t had the damage fixed yet and now you have additional damage. Your adjuster has already estimated the hail damage on your vehicle from the first storm. They will come out and do a second assessment. They will estimate the vehicle as it is with all new damage. They will estimate the cost to repair all of the damage and then subtract the amount already assessed from the first storm. This will give them the estimated cost to repair the damage from the second storm.
    • You haven’t filed a claim for damage caused by a past hail storm and now you have new auto hail damage. Your adjuster will assess all of the damage from both storms and divide the damage based on “cost to repair” averages from the 1st storm and the damage assessed from the new storm.
    • You filed a claim for a previous storm and have already had your vehicle repaired but now you have new damage. In this scenario, you would simply file a new hail damage claim.
  5. No money to cover the deductible. Don’t feel bad. No one has the money to cover their deductible because it is a very unexpected expense. Even if you HAD the money, the last thing you want to do is spend it on a deductible. I don’t want to call it a “perk” but one of the benefits of hiring an ATX paintless dent repair shop that is NOT on your insurance company’s “preferred repair shop” list is the simple fact that we work for YOU. We don’t need to collect the deductible. It is something we can choose to absorb into our labor costs. Direct repair shops are required to collect a deductible. Mostly because they have negotiated a “discounted rate” with the insurance company and can’t afford to not collect the deductible.
  6. BONUS Content! If you haven’t tried meditation, now might be a good time to give it a go.
    • Take a seat. Find a place to sit that feels calm and quiet to you.
    • Set a time limit.
    • Notice your body.
    • Feel your breath.
    • Notice when your mind has wandered. …
    • Be kind to your wandering mind.
    • Close with kindness.
    • Now, bring your awareness back to your body and call Superior Dent Solutions. We’ll take care of everything for you!

Hail Damage Repair Cost – Oklahoma City

How much does it cost to fix hail damage on my car?

Learn more about the 3 factors that count when estimating the cost to repair hail damage.

Schedule free inspection

The Cost of Hail Damage Repair

3 FACTORS THAT DETERMINE COST

Wind Speeds

Wind speeds and the size of the hail stones directly affect the degree of severity and cost to repair. If the wind speeds are high, hail stones will ride the wind and blow horizontally – hitting side panels. Most hail damage is found on the top panels – roof, trunk lid, and hood – in severe wind conditions, hail dents show up on the side panels making the cost to repair higher.

Size of Hail Stones

The stronger the storm, the larger the hailstone. Hailsotne sizes 1″ and larger in diameter will result in dent damage to a vehicle. April 19, 2023, Oklahoma City storm produced golfball-sized hail. See actual damage from the storm in the video on the right.

The Insurance Coverage you Carry

If you have comprehensive coverage, hail damage repair is covered outside of your deductible. At Superior Dent Solutions of Oklahoma City, we cover that cost. If you have liability coverage, the average cost per dent out-of-pocket is anywhere from $50-$150 per dent.

Kind words from our Oklahoma City auto hail repair customers.

Thank you for the great experience this morning when we dropped our car off. You went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of.

Shelly Wilson Kingery

Yukon, OK

I HIGHLY recommend this place if you have hail damage to your vehicle. They are professional, courteous, and do a great job. They worked with my insurance and since my comp deductible was low they were able to pay my deductible and wrote me a $200 bonus check as well. It sounds like there might be a catch, but there isn’t. They even detailed my car!

Stephen and his team did a wonderful job with the hail damage my car received. They handled everything and got my car back to me quickly. They went above and beyond. Great team!

OKC – Steps to Protect Your Car From Hail Damage

Woke up this morning to another threat of severe weather including damaging winds, possible tornados, (oh yea), and hail for Oklahoma City this afternoon. Go figure. Some of you have already had your car’s hail damage repaired from the hail storm last month! I surely do love OKC but come on.

In today’s blog, I will be going over some simple preparation steps you can take to protect your vehicle from another round of storms.

Power tip: Don’t wait. Do it now. I have seen the sky open up out of NOWHERE and dump hail the size of golf balls. No warning, no scary sky, just bam. Even 2 minutes of golfball-sized hail will do a serious number on your vehicle panels.

  1. Home garages, carports, and barns. If you have any of these and work from home, stop what you are doing and move your vehicles to shelter.
  2. Tell a friend, family member, or coworker. Maybe you live next to an older couple or you know that your son or daughter might be trying to have an R&R day – walk next door or pick up the phone and let them know there is a severe weather threat.
  3. Parking garages. If you work downtown, here are a few you could check out. See more here.
    • Arts Garage – 431 W. Main -$2 per hr. / $10 24 hr.
    • Century Center – 100 W. Main – $2 per hr. / $10 24 hr.
    • Sheridan/Walker – 501 W. Sheridan – $2 per hr. / $10 24 hr.
    • Convention Center – 15 SW 4th -$2 per hr. / $10 24 hr.
    • Bricktown Parking Garage – 222 East Sheridan Avenue – $4 per day (Book spot online!)
  4. Gas Stations. If you are already out and about, pulling into a gas station and hiding out under a gas station awning works in a pinch.
  5. Comprehensive insurance coverage. Quite literally, the best “coverage” you could have if you live in the Oklahoma City area. Comprehensive covers the cost to repair auto hail damage 100%. Nothing like being prepared!
  6. DIY last resort stuff. Car mats, heavy blankets (moving blankets are great), cardboard boxes, area rugs, and bungee cords. You’ve probably seen some funny pictures on social media of people doing this but if you’re in a pinch, who cares what it looks like? I mean, you might even go viral!

Filing Auto Hail Claim in OKC – Step by Step

Expedite the Oklahoma City Auto Hail Claims Process

2023 OKC Updated Hail Claims Process

Superior Dent Solutions team has created this guide to help customers get their hail claims filed with their insurance company and vehicles repaired faster and back on the road.

We all know Oklahoma is a hot spot for damaging hail storms & every storm is different when it comes to the hail claims process. After a few weeks of repairing vehicles from a particular storm, we like to share what is working best for our customers.

  1. Call your insurance provider and start the claims process. If you need assistance, we are happy to help. We can set up a 3-way phone call with you, your insurer, and one of our team members.
    • Progressive – 1-800-776-4737
    • AllState – 1-800-255-7828
    • GEICO – (800) 841-3000
    • AAA – 1-833-806-7833
    • Esurance – 1-800-378-7262
    • Farm Bureau – 1-800-226-6383
    • Farmers Insurance – 1-800-435-7764
    • Liberty Mutual – 800-225-2467
    • Shelter – 1-800-743-5837
    • State Farm – 1 (800) 782-8332
    • USAA – 800-531-8722
  2. Questions asked and information you will need.
    • Name
    • Policy number
    • Date of birth
    • Date of occurrence (storm)
    • Where was your vehicle when it was damaged?
    • What is the size of the damage?
    • What panels are damaged?
    • Was there any glass damage?
    • Is the vehicle drivable?
  3. Identify your paintless dent repair shop of choice.
It is up to you where you take your vehicle to repairs. Some insurance companies will imply that you need to take your vehicle to a shop that is within their “preferred network.” This is a practice referred to as “steering.” This is not a legal practice and it is well within your rights to choose the shop you trust. Superior Dent Solutions guarantees all repairs with a lifetime warranty. We have 25+ years of experience and work with ALL insurance companies.
  4. Information you will want to ask for from the insurance company when you file your claim.
    • Claim number.
    • Rental car verification code.
      • Ask the agent to set you up with a reservation with a car rental agency.
        • Enterprise –  (405) 844-6700 – Option 4 – Option 2
        • Hertz
      • Your insurance company should give you a verification code. We will need this information to make sure a rental car is available.
  5. You will be assigned an adjuster to handle your claim. Within 24-72 hours, you will receive an email from your assigned adjuster.
    • **To expedite the repair process, you can choose to forward the email you receive from your assigned adjuster to your Superior Dent Solutions representative. Once we receive this information, we can send the adjuster pictures and schedule a time for them to come by the shop to look over the vehicle and provide an estimate to repair the damage.
    • You can wait for the adjuster to get ahold of you to schedule the estimate. You can have the adjuster meet you at your location or at our shop. Just give us a call with the date/time and we will block a time at the shop for you and the adjuster.
  6. Reserve a rental car or if your policy doesn’t cover a rental, request a complimentary loaner from us.
    • If you have rental coverage. After a big hail storm, rental agencies get busy and rental vehicles get booked fast. We are happy to do this for you or you can do it yourself, whatever is easier for you. We will call the rental agency and ask for the next available rental. Give them the verification code provided by your insurance provider. Sometimes rentals take 5-7 days to reserve. Once we have this information, we will call you. We will meet you at the car rental agency to pick up your vehicle and take it to our shop for repairs. If you have decided to make the reservation, just give us a call and provide us with the details.
Enterprise is super close to our shop. Enterprise –  (405) 844-6700 Option 4 – Option 2
    • If you need an SDS loaner. Superior Dent Solutions has a fleet of complimentary loaner vehicles available for our customers. If you need a loaner while your vehicle is in the shop, we will get you in line to borrow one of ours. Get in line now!
  7. Vehicle inspection by the insurance adjuster.
Option 1: Schedule for an adjuster to look at your vehicle at your home or office.
***Option 2: Drop off your vehicle at the shop to be inspected. We regularly have adjusters come by the shop to inspect vehicles and provide estimates. You are welcome to stay for the estimate or you can drop off your vehicle and we can go through the estimation process with them.
***This is beneficial for 3 reasons.
    • Before the adjuster arrives, we can thoroughly inspect and identify each panel under our LED light panels and mark the damage.
    • You will save time by knowing ALL of the damage has been identified. If the adjuster misses damage while inspecting your vehicle at your location and we find additional damage once it’s in the shop for repairs, we will not need to submit a supplement request to cover the additional damage found.
    • Once the estimate has been created and approved, we can immediately get your vehicle in line for repairs. If you rented a vehicle from Enterprise or are borrowing one of our loaners, you can leave your vehicle with us for repairs.

What is insurance steering?

What is a “Preferred Repair Shop” or “Network Repair Shop”?

Insurance companies will partner with certain repair shops that agree to negotiate better pricing to improve their bottom line, not yours.

It’s Your Choice.

Following an incident that damages your vehicle, be it by hail or collision/accident, you have the right to choose which auto body or paintless dent repair shop fixes your car. Your insurer, even if they are covering the cost of the repairs, cannot dictate where you go.

Great short video explaining “Insurance Steering”.

Insurance companies could threaten to not offer a lifetime warranty on the repair. The thing is, warranties are offered by repair shops, not insurance companies

“Steering” all the same but by different names.

State Farm calls it their “Select Service Repairs” or “Select Service Shops.” Learn more.

Nationwide calls it “Nationwide On Your Side Auto Repair Network.” Learn more.

GEICO calls it their Auto Repair Express. Learn more.

Progressive has the “Network Shops.” Learn more.

Steering tactics.

* The following are common tactics used by insurance companies to “steer” you to a “preferred shop,” none of which are true.

  • We cannot guarantee out-of-network repairs.
  • There could be delays in getting an adjuster to estimate your damages but if you use a preferred shop, we will send one immediately.
  • You’ll have to pay the difference.

Report steering now!

If you think your insurance company has illegally directed you to a “preferred repair shop”, it is 100% within your rights to file a complaint with the Oklahoma Insurance Department for them to investigate. You have the right to choose the body shop or paintless dent repair shop to repair your vehicle.

You can call 800-552-0071, or file a complaint online.

Oklahoma Anti-Steering Law

You can read the document in its entirety here.

365:15-3-8. (C) Travel. Insurers shall not require a claimant to travel unreasonably either to inspect a replacement motor vehicle, to obtain a repair estimate, or to have the motor vehicle repaired at a specific repair shop.

365:15-3-8. (E) Estimates. If an insurer prepares an estimate of the cost of motor vehicle repairs, such estimate shall be in an amount for which it may be reasonably expected the damage can be satisfactorily repaired. The insurer shall give a copy of the estimate to the claimant and may furnish to the claimant, the names of one or more conveniently located repair shops, if requested by the claimant.

365:15-3-8. (G) When the insurer elects to repair a damaged motor vehicle and designates a specific repair shop for automobile repairs, the insurer shall cause the damaged motor vehicle to be restored to its condition prior to the loss at no additional cost and within a reasonable period of time. The
claimant shall also be furnished an itemized statement of repair at the time of acceptance of the repaired motor vehicle.

Paintless Dent Repair

Potential dangers of being steered.

Direct Repair Shops (DRP) will make repairs on your vehicle within the scope and monetary limit dictated by the insurer – not dictated by your vehicle’s needs.

  1. Inaccurate estimates
Your insurer dictates the scope of the repair work, not the paintless dent repair technician.
  2. Discounted repairs
Technicians have reduced profit margins because of the insurer’s limited scope.
  3. Quantity vs quality
Shops will want to work on your vehicle for as brief of a time as possible due to lower agreed labor costs.
  4. Customer isn’t always first
The “pay-to-play” partnership between repair shops & insurance companies ultimately decreases efficiency in the market and harms the consumer.
