When Hail Damage Requires Conventional Auto Body Repair
What are the most common scenarios when we use conventional auto body techniques?
Sharp Creases / Stretched Metal
When a dent is exceptionally deep or has a sharp, jagged crease, the metal is often “stretched.” In these cases, the metal loses its structural integrity and cannot be massaged back into its original shape.
Dents Near the Edge of a Panel
PDR tools need leverage and access to the back of the metal. If a dent is located on the very edge of a door or hood (the hem flange), there is often no room for a PDR tool to get behind it. These “edge dents” typically require traditional bodywork and refinishing.
Cracked or Compromised Paint
PDR requires the paint to be flexible. If a hailstone hits with enough force to chip, crack, or “spiderweb” the paint, PDR alone isn’t enough. We must perform traditional bodywork to sand, prime, and repaint the area to prevent future rusting and ensure a seamless look.
Panel Oversaturation
Oversaturation happens when a hailstorm is so severe that the density of the impacts leaves more dents on a single panel than flat, “clean” surface area. In these cases, the metal’s integrity is compromised, making a full panel replacement.

How big does hail have to be to damage car paint?
High wind speeds and hail size are the two determining factors for painting damage during a hail storm. One side of the vehicle can look untouched while the other is completely loaded with nasty dents & dings. This is due to the wind direction and speed.
Unfortunately, hail of any size can damage your vehicle. That said, if the hailstone is an inch across in diameter and the wind speeds are high, you can expect it to cause some paint damage.
The paint damage might appear as chipping or scratching in & around the dent.
Can I still get paintless dent repair if my car has paint damage?
Yes. We use a repair method that combines paintless dent repair and conventional dent repair. After removing the dent, we prepare the surface and complete the repair with paint. This technique is called ‘Push to Paint.’
Does Superior Dent Solutions repair collision damage?
We primarily reserve our auto body and paint service for vehicles damaged in a hail storm. This keeps us very busy, but outside of hail season in Austin, we will extend our service offerings to customers whose vehicles have minor collision damage, door dings, large dent repairs, and more.
